The following are the criteria to establish the presence of an addictive disorder:
- Do you engage in a sexual behaviour often, to a greater extent, or over a longer period than intended?
- Do you experience a persistent desire for ta specific sexual behavior?
- Have you made one or more unsuccessful efforts to reduce or control the behavior?
- Do you spend much time spent in activities necessary for the sexual behavior, engaging in the behavior, or recovering from the effects of the behaviour?
- Do you experience frequent preoccupation with sexual behavior or the rituals that are involved - in the preparatory activities associated with the behaviour?
- Do your frequently engage in the behavior when you’re expected to fulfill social, occupational or recreational obligations?
- Have you given up or limited important social, occupational, or recreational activities because of your sexual behavior?
- Does the behaviour continue despite knowing that it is causing a persistent or recurrent social, financial, psychological, or physical problem?
- Have you experienced a need to increase the intensity or frequency of the behavior to achieve the desired effect?
- Have you experienced a diminished effect even though you have continued the behaviour with the same or even greater intensity?
- Do you experience restlessness or irritability if you are unable to engage in the sexual behavior?
At least three criteria must be met for diagnosis, and some symptoms of the disturbance must have persisted for at least 1 month or have occurred repeatedly over a longer period. (Goodman)
